After the Second Round

img_4719.jpgSecond round of the tournament has started at 10.00 am. The pairings of the 1st round were not very difficult for the favorite teams but things were a little bit different in the 2nd round. Two strong teams of the Olympiad, Azerbaijan and Russia, have played against each other. The score was 2-2 after a hard fought battle. Needless to say, this score was good for the other favourites. The second seed, India defeated England with a perfect score: 4-0 and thus maintained his perfect record. Georgia joined India at the top also with a flawless victory over Greece . In contrast to these spectacular results, the score in the exciting battle between Hungary and Uzbekistan was very close: 2.5-1.5 a score which also reflects the close strengths of these teams. The other teams with 2/2 are Armenia and Turkey Turkuaz.

Four Turkish teams have played against each other in the 2nd round. The proud victors of these matches were Turkey Turkuaz and Turkey White. One of the most suprising results of this round came from Nezihe Ezgi Menzi (1803) who drew against the 3rd board of Armenia, FM Robert Aghasaryan (2240) which sends a warning message to all: these talented girls are not to be taken lightly! The other surprise was the defeat of  Iljushenok(RUS, 2426 ELO) in the hands of Guliyev(AZE, 2089 ELO), who helped his team to get a precious half point from first seed of the tournament, Russia.

Tournament hall is located in a seperate zone called "Chess Island". In this 'island', players are having their matches in a hall covered by trees and a small symbolic pool around the island. Being far from city noise affects their performances in a positive way.

First round took almost 4 hours. At the end, there wasn't any surprise to be seen on match scores at the team level. On the other hand some players showed great individual performances even though their teams lost their matches. For example half points got by  talented girls  Cansu Söylemez(TR) and Emel Kaya (TR) against FM Dubov(RUS) and FM Lorand(HUN) respectively, the effort of Rustem Nazarov (TKM) in drawing against FN Baijarani(AZE)and the win by Ufuk Sezen Arat (TR) against Baghdasaryan(ARM)  were among the most notable results in first round.

About Akhisar

Akhisar is a county district and its town center in Manisa Province in the Aegean region of Western Turkey. Akhisar is also the ancient city of Thyatira or Thyateira.

With archaeological findings proving settlements going back to 3000 BC, Akhisar has been a busy trade center with its strategic location at the intersection of important roads during ancient and medieval ages. It was one of the cities where money was first used. Akhisar also hosted one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Thyateira, Thyatira).

The name of the city is mentioned in the Bible. Akhisar maintained its importance as a regional trade center during 600 years of Ottoman Empire. Today's Akhisar is still the trade and business center in its region. Akhisar's name is internationally recalled with tobacco. The fertile Akhisar Plain produces about 10% of total Turkish tobacco production. Akhisar's high-quality olives and olive oil are also globally known.
